Geneva Motor Show 2013 Highlights: Top 10 Cars

The 2013 Geneva Motor Show one of the most important, if not the most important automotive show in the calendar year, and is consistently the event of choice for a slew of grand unveilings. 2013 was no exception, with critical new models previewed from McLaren, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Alfa Romeo and a whole host of other prestige manufacturers. True to tradition, there were also a number of positively awful cars on show (Mitsubishi GR-HEV, anyone?), necessitating a wrap of the show that brings you the highlights, and only the highlights, of the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

10. Spyker B6 Venator Concept

Unlike a slew of recent Spyker concepts, the B6 Venator is actually slated for production in 2014, which renders this a crucial car for Spyker, a company who staved off bankruptcy in 2011.  This concept harks back to Spyker’s heritage as an aircraft manufacturer, with unique aeronautical details throughout the car. This is undoubtedly a very important car for Spyker, and its success may just determine the future of the brand.

9. Toyota FT-86 Open Concept

A convertible variant of the GT86 was only a matter of time, and whilst the FT-86 is not a done deal, it is very likely (indeed very, very, likely)  that we will be seeing this in Toyota showrooms in the not-too-distant future given the success of the GT86. The FT-86 runs the same high-revving, naturally aspirated flat-six as the GT86.

8. Bentley Flying Spur

The redesigned Bentley Flying Spur unveiled at Geneva 2013 operates the same 6L twin turbo W12 powerhouse, tuned to deliver more power than any other Bentley four-door in history. 0-100km/h in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 322 km/h (200 mp/h) reinforce the performance capabilities of this deceptively quick sedan. With a luxury four-door segment that has become wildly competitive, the Flying Spur needs to perform, and perform well.

7. Aston Martin Rapide S

Don’t let the name fool you  – this is not an ‘S’ model of the current Rapide, but rather a new generation altogether. The hallmark Aston Martin grille has been refined (and strikingly so!) to provide a more assertive, agressive stance. Power is up 17%, and the Rapide can now pull 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, or 0.3 seconds better than the outgoing model. One of the more incredible looking cars on sale just got even better.

6. Porsche 911 GT3

The new and improved Porsche 911 GT3 is all about refinement rather than revolution, as this new model uses the same 3.8L flat six engine as the outgoing GT3. However, power output is up from 320kW (435 bhp) to 350 kW (475 bhp), and the new GT3 does the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.5 seconds, which is 0.6 seconds quicker than the previous model – phenomenal numbers whichever way you look at it. Somehow Porsche continues to raise the bar just a little higher with each successive 911 generation, and without even driving it I am willing to bet anything that the new GT3 will not disappoint.

 5. Rolls Royce Wraith

Rolls Royce unveiled their fastest ever production car at Geneva, the Wraith.  This 6.6L twin-turbo V12 beast generates 465kW/ 624bhp, resulting in 0-100km/h in 4.4 seconds. At its core this is still a Rolls Royce, however, and thus will feature the sumptuous and magnificent interior that defines the Rolls Royce experience.

Not exactly a revolutionary car in the luxury segment, but certainly a revolutionary car for Rolls Royce.

4. Audi RS Q3

Audi’s RS division has been smashing out the models recently, including the new RS6 Avant, RS5 Cabriolet and the RS7. It was only a matter of time then before the RS division branched out into the Q lineup, increasing both the top speed (250km/h) and the power (228 kW / 310 bhp) of the standard Q3, resulting in class-leading performance and agility. The Q3 is essentially a squashed and flattened Q5, and despite the RS livery, those awkward proportions remain. Despite this, the RS Q3 still looks menacing enough to belong, at least superficially so, to the remarkable RS lineup.

3. Alfa Romeo 4C

The Alfa Romeo 4C marks Alfa’s return to the lightweight sports coupé world, a place where Alfa Romeo has been markedly absent for a while now. The 4C shown here is a strictly limited edition, available in either ‘Carrera White’ or ‘Alfa Red’. Whichever colour you pick, it’s hard to find a bad angle – this car is incredibly good looking.

2. McLaren P1


The mean-looking P1 is McLaren’s answer to Ferrari, and despite the somewhat unappealing paint scheme, there is simply no denying that this car is sensational in every way possible. A reworked version of the 3.8L V8 used in the McLaren MP4-12C has been mated to an electric motor, which contributes to a sub-3.0 second sprint to 100km/h, and 200km/h in less than 7 seconds.

McLaren is only producing 375 vehicles and yet has over 800 people expressing a strong interest in the car, meaning that potential buyers will have to be vetted and selected based on suitability. McLaren has already banked deposits for over half of the 375 total P1’s to be produced, and estimates to be sold out within a couple of weeks.

1. Ferrari LaFerrari


The Enzo replacement was always going to be the star of the show, and like the McLaren P1, the LaFerrari previews Ferrari’s first ever hybrid supercar. The numbers themselves are nothing short of awe-inspiring: 6.3L V12 with a combined output (petrol and electric) of 708kW. Like the P1, the LaFerrari will reach 100km/h in under 3 seconds, and blast to 300km/h in a mere 15 seconds.

Ferrari will build just 499 examples over the next two years, with this model to be priced approximately 20% higher than its McLaren P1 counterpart. That said, Ferrari has never had a problem selling models before, and a brief look at history will show that Ferrari, just like McLaren, will undoubtedly be turning away customers in droves. Pity about the name though. LaFerrari? Sounds like something Barbie would drive. That said, this thing looks absolutely incredible, awe-inspiring even, so I suppose the stupid name can be forgiven.
